How to Make Mom’s French Toast

This is inspired by my mom Linda. She would make this French Toast when we were younger, and I have been making this recipe now for over 20 years. Even though this is more of a treat that I make on special occasions, it is still one of my favorite recipes to make for my family.

My mom didn’t necessarily teach me too much about everyday cooking, but she was a source of creativity in our home growing up. There was never a time in my memory that my mom was not doing or learning something new. Whether it was calligraphy, cake decorating, sewing, tole painting, and even making tamales with my grandmother. Both my mother and grandmother taught me the importance of knowing how to make something yourself.

And even though this recipe was was found on the back of King’s Hawaiian bread bag, making it with love is the secret ingredient. Thanks Mom.

Below are the ingredients that I have simplified through the years.

Ingredients:

4 eggs

1/2 Cup Milk (I use homemade cashew milk)

Sprinkle Cinnamon

Sprinkle Nutmeg

1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

One loaf of Kings Hawaiian bread. You can find pre-sliced loaf or use the old school King’s Hawaiian round loaf and slice it like we did growing up.

Instructions:

Put eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla in a bowl and mix until it’s a consistent liquid. Dip bread slices in the bowl to soak both sides, and then cook on a flat griddle until golden brown.

Add any fruit you wish or simply drizzle with your favorite syrup.

We like to add strawberry and bananas and then we top it off with my homemade granola.

Enjoy.

If by chance you have extras, or if you would like to simply make extra, you can store them in the freezer and pop them in the toaster when you’re ready to eat.

Or you can use the French Toast as burger buns…so good!
